Beavers
CHURCHDOWN BEAVERS
Beaver Scouts are boys and girls aged between six and eight years old and belong to the youngest section in the Scouting family. Beaver Scouts enjoy making friends, team games, going on visits, helping others and making a difference both at home and in the local community.
They meet once a week during term time at Brown Lodge, Church Road, Churchdown on a Wednesday 17:00-18:00.
While the Beaver motto is Be Prepared for Churchdown Beavers it’s Fun and Friends also and they certainly experience this in our Colony with activities from scavenger hunts, to making paper planes, to blindfold food tasting – there will really be something for everyone as Beavers learn new skills, try new challenges, go on adventures and are curious about the world around them. Being a Beaver is all about growing and learning in small but big ways.
Every Beaver is unique but there are some things all Beavers agree on – such as treating everyone with kindness and promising to do their best and to live by faith or beliefs.
Earning Badges and achieving Challenges
There are many Beaver Scout badges that can be awarded both individually and as a colony.
As a Colony we work towards achieving the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award which covers areas for the My World, My Skills, My Outdoors, My Adventure, Teamwork and Personal Challenge Awards and at least four activity and/or staged badges. However, it would be impossible to cover all these badges at our weekly meetings and therefore some can be worked towards at home and/or through liaison with leaders or external activity instructors.
They are optional but provide an opportunity to reward a young person who has taken part in activities over a period of time while in Beavers. They should continue to raise interest and extend a young person’s skills throughout their time in Scouting. The Challenge Badges are designed to get the Beavers to try new and often different activities.
A must for the Bronze is doing a sleepover, part of the My Outdoors Challenge although in Churchdown these are in tents indoors at Brown Lodge or maybe another scouting venue. This is often the first time a young person spends a night away from home but as sleepovers are themed they will have no time to be homesick because it fun with friends!
What’s Next?
When a Beaver Scout reaches their 8th birthday then it’s time to think about Cub Scouts and prepare to “swim up” to the Cub Pack and say goodbye to Beavers..
